A Better Way To Predict How Trump Would Govern
Instead of picking through the word salad of his promises, maybe look at what he did last time
This week Donald Trump set off a flurry of debate when he told one interviewer that he was open to cuts in Medicare and Social Security, then quickly told another that, no, he would never threaten either program.
It was a lot like the time, a few months back, when he said he would find a compromise on abortion that would make everybody happy, only to then say he would support a national ban.
Or when he said he was committed to making health care more affordable, even though he was still committed to Obamacare repeal.
After each of these episodes, many of us spent a lot of time parsing his statements, trying to figure out what he really said or meant -- and what it indicated about how he'd govern if he wins in November. It's the exact same thing we all did the first time he ran for president, in 2016.
But there's a big difference this time around: He's a former president with a governing record, which means we don't have to pick through the word salad of his promises to figure out what he'd do. We can look at what he actually did.
My latest HuffPost article is an attempt at that, focusing on three issues that I happen to know well — and that, if you believe the polls, are important to the voters too.
